LEONIE SELWYN'S LRPS PANEL
Presenting a panel to the RPS seemed a daunting task but one which always
appealed to me. I went to a panel day to find out what was required, pored
over the details on the RPS web site and took advice from club members. The
"L" is the first distinction the RPS offers. I had prepared the makings of
a colour and a mono panel of prints, but I was concerned that digital mono
prints could be compared to traditional darkroom ones. I could also have presented
the panel as an electronic submission. All advice however pointed me to go
with the panel I liked the best, so I decided to go with the mono. The "L"
does not have to have a theme, and the standard equates to good club photography
level. The pictures should gel together and show a variety of approaches and
techniques. I chose a loose theme of The Natural World. It all turned out
to be enormously rewarding and enjoyable, although a great deal of work. The
judging day was open so I was able to go and actually see my work put up for
judging. The whole process taught me a lot and I would recommend any keen
photographer to give it a try. I have never done traditional film work and
went straight to a digital SLR - I've never regretted it.
